EARTH OVERSHOOT DAY FALLS ON JULY 24

How to respond?

By the 24th of July 2025, humanity will have used more from nature than Earth can regenerate in this entire year. That means that humanity is living as if we had 1.8 Earths. We are pushing well past nature’s limits.

Get ready for Earth Overshoot Day by joining this free one-hour event which will take place on Monday, 21st of July, at 16:30 Central European Time. Register here for the event hosted by the Club of Rome, Global Footprint Network, and Food Odyssey.

This event features a conversation with sustainability leaders from around the world:

Paul Shrivastava, Co-President, The Club of Rome, US
Silvia Zimmermann del Castillo, Co-President, The Club of Rome, Argentina
Mathis Wackernagel, Founder, Global Footprint Network, Switzerland and US
Maria Elisa Zuppiroli, Researcher, Food Odyssey, Italy
Lewis Akenji, Managing Director, Hot or Cool Institute, Germany and Cameroon

They will unpack what overshoot means, why it matters and how it’s impacting everything from economies to ecosystems and food to materials.

Each speaker brings their unique perspectives and expertise in several domains to the conversation. It will include unpacking implications for regions like South America with its large natural resources advantage and others with significant resource deficits. It will also address what this means for food systems, economic strategies, and educational needs to prepare professionals to meaningfully respond to this looming risk.

This free event is dedicated to media representatives to help them cover Earth Overshoot Day. But all others are most welcome as well. Please join us – all it takes is to register.

Background

Earth Overshoot Day is the date in the year when humanity will have used up nature’s entire annual budget of ecological resources and services, according to the Global Footprint Network, the international sustainability organization that pioneered the Ecological Footprint, and York University. This year, it arrives 7 days earlier than in 2024.
