#MoveTheDate
If every other family had one less child and parenthood was postponed by two years, by 2050 we would move Overshoot Day 49 days.*
*NOTE: If we continued as now, we would be at 9.7 billion. This is the UN medium variant estimate. If each mother or father had on average 1.8 children (= 0.9 children per person), compared to 2.3 currently, and parenthood was delayed by 2 years, we’d be at 7.7 billion in 2050. Assuming humanity’s Ecological Footprint per capita stays at 2020 levels (2.47 gha per person), the difference in 2050 would be 49 days.

Having reduced child mortality by 60%, Kenya has made significant medical progress since the millennium. However, there are deep and persisting challenges with the nation’s health that remain unaddressed. Dandelion Africa’s research shows that 67% of women in rural areas have unmet needs for family planning, while only 56% receive prenatal care. Insufficient healthcare like this is often due to poor education and infrastructure, therefore the focus to reach remote areas.
The program is divided between several platforms, each delivering healthcare in a unique and integrated way: the Mobile Backpack Nurse reaches 34 different villages monthly, and works with 30 health Institutions on systems change and in an effort to improve the health seeking behaviour of their communities. All of the above provide consultations, HIV tests, immunization, cervical cancer screening, and family planning all for no fee whatsoever. Further sexual reproductive healthcare is offered at static clinics, which are equipped for more detailed examinations. Combined, these departments provided medical care to 101,636 people in 2018 alone. Central to the Health Program is an unprejudiced work ethic that aims to give a compassionate and professional service to people of all backgrounds and ages.
This is an essential component, as many do not seek healthcare services due to stigma, fear, and culture. A new and fully furnished maternity ward, built early 2019, provides a safe space for all those in need of a comfortable and safe childbirth and over 500 safe deliveries and as many post-partum contraceptives given in that short time despite the pandemic.
