Stop whatever you’re doing — right now — because today is Earth Overshoot Day! Congratulations, citizen of the Earth: You’ve used all the resources that you were allotted for the year. With our current global consumption habits, we’re using way more resources than we have land to sustainably produce it — 1.6 Earths’ worth of resources, to be exact. According to calculations from Global Footprint Network, from this day to the end of 2015, we’re borrowing everything we use this year — be it fish or fossil fuels — from the future.
Watch Grist’s video to learn more about what Earth Overshoot Day means, and how we can curb our consumption habits. But do it fast, because you’ve already used all your electricity for the year.
